For me this was the First time at lanzarote and even the First time on the canary Islands. I arrived just one day before the competition so I didn’t have much chance to get to know the spot a little bit. But as far as I could tell after my first session I had a good feeling about the spot. This year we didn’t have almost any waves which made it easier to do also switch moves going out.
Because this is my first year I didn’t get an ideal ranking in the first single elimination, I first had to qualify me against Endro Finies from Bonaire to end up afterward against Kiri Thode who now is currently 2de in the ranking like last year.
On the second day we had enough wind in the afternoon to start with the first single elimination. The conditions kicked in really fast. We just had done with eating when the wind kicked in perfectly. I had 15 min before my heat started so I had no time to have a decent warm up, it was more running to my gear to get everything ready and get into my wetsuit to go on the water. I took 4.7 which was the perfect choice; I was fully powered up with it and could do some nice power moves. After 5 min of free sailing my heat started. It went just perfect. I started with a plaining Kono followed by a Culo. Went out did a nice shaka and an airflaka. On the way in I did a good shaka follow by a nice bob OH. On the way out I did a ss kono and a really good and high airfunnel OH. On the way in I only had one move left so I wanted to do a burner but I didn’t have enough speed as the wind was a bit lighter on the inside so made a ss kono. But on the way I out I made it up by making a really nice burner 540. So I ended my heat without even falling one time. I think this was for sure one of my best heats so far and gave me a lot of energy for the next heat, my heat against Kiri thode . I knew I would be impossible to beat him as he was doing all the new moves perfectly. But if I look afterwards I still did a pretty good heat. I landed on the way in Kono, Culo, Burner and even went for Kabichuci but didn’t get the slide in it good enough where true I crashed. Also I landed almost a double spock but crashed (fell of my board actually) because the wind just totally disappeared when I completed the move. On the outside I landed a good Shaka, went for a big airflaka OH handed but came out it no handed and crashed the move. But I still did a airfunnel and another burner on the other way so I landed my burners on my both ways. So I had another good run but knew I lost against kiri who was really killing me with moves like airbob into bob, hugh kono, burner into penuta and moves like this I knew it was a level too high for me.
I was hoping for the double so I could work me up into the top 16 maybe even top 10 again as I knew if I kept sailing like those 2 heat I could manage it. But as it turned out there was no more wind to run a double elimination. In the end I still got a good feeling after this event, I know I can get a good result if we run a double and have a good feeling to go to Fuerteventura although stronger winds isn’t my specialty I still think I can get for sure into the top 16. This still stays my goal for this year.
