After 2 weeks of training in Fuerte- the competition finally started at the beach of Sotavento in front of René Egli center 1.
The first day the wind didn’t really want to pick up till it suddenly did at 4 O’clock. They decided to run only the first round of the first single as we didn’t have enough time to run any more rounds. I was in the 4th heat of the first round against Victor Wederfoot from Curacao. Not yet the strongest opponent but in the PWA you don’t have any easy opponents either. I did a pretty good heat with some nice shakas both ways and lots of other moves. I advanced and would meat Steven Van Broeckhoven in the next round.
The second day the wind was full offshore which made it flat water close to the shore but also extremely gusty and pretty strong. I took the S1 4.0 to be also plaining between the gust and to be able to keep close to the beach to find some flat water. My heat started and I wanted to go for a double spock while I was full overpowered, I jumped full speed, missed my mast and crashed really hard in the water which gave me a headache for the rest of the day and also for my heat. I knew if I wanted to have a small chance against Steven I had to pull out all my biggest moves and take many risks to beat him, too many risks which made me crash really a lot but also made me land the first triple spock of the event which made me really happy and gave me good confidence for the double elimination.
The 3rd day of the competition it was time to finish the first double elimination and time for me to work up myself again a bit. My first heat was against Endro Finies from Bonaire. The wind was more side-offshore today but still not as strong as it is normally. I didn’t have my best heat against Endro but still enough to advance to the next round. Now I had to go against Ian Mouro lemons probably one of the best Brazilians who is on the PWA this year. It would be really a hard job to beat him and that made me a bit nervous. I went out to do my best I could and started with a really good double spock OH which gave me so much energy that I landed some really good moves on the way out combining powers moves like ponch, shaka and airflaka with some nice switch moves like ss kono etc. I came out of the heat with a really good feeling but I knew I also crashed some times and on the way in didn’t make all the best new school moves as I don’t control them enough yet to throw them in the competition. Eventually I won and was in the top 16 and would face N. Akgazciyan for a place in the top 10. The heat went really bad and I couldn’t show the level I did against Mouro Lemons in the heat before but still made it to land my 4 moves each way which is always an important thing to do in the PWA. I also so Nicolas crashing a lot so I didn’t know whether I won or not. Eventually I lost with a 2-1 discision from Nicolas A. although he only made 3 moves on the way out but one of them was a wet chacho which made him win in the end and left me with a 13 place which didn’t make me too happy as I know I could, should have been able to win against him. But was full motivated to get a better result in the next double elimination.
The fourth day we started with the second single elimination and we started to see the first small waves building up and strong wind kicking in and everybody grabbing for their smallest gear to keep a bit of control during their heats. I was automatically moves to the second round after my top 16 place in the first double elimination and would meet Edvan da Souza from brazil in my first heat. My heat went okay but not again my best heat I simply crashed too much for my feeling and didn’t know whether I would win although I had a nice double spock and a big ss kono on the outside. To see Edvan crashing on his last toad on the way out just in the end made me think I still could have won this heat which eventually I also did with a 2-1 decision. Now I would face Taty Frans in the 3 round of the single and just went for a lot of fun and try to put together a good heat. Taty started with a planning forward in front of my which I fallowed but then I crashed my double spock while Taty just landed a perfect burner 360 in front of me, I knew I already lost my heat than and just try to give my best for the rest of the heat. On the way out I landed every thing perfectly a big shaka, Airflaka, ponch, ss kono and a full planning gozzada on the way out which gave me a really good feeling, only on the way in I just crashed 2 more times and made 4 save but not too difficult moves and knew I lost although on the way out I could pretty much keep up with Taty. Now it was all depending on the last double elimination which would be sailed on the last day.
The 5the and last day of the event, and also a hard last double elimination as I had to face either Bjorn Saragoza who got 7the in the first double but lost against Paternina V-04 in his first heat in the second single or Micheal Rossmeir who was definitely one of the better sailors on this event. But first I had to see who of them would face me. Bjorn didn’t make his best heat while Rossi made a perfect heat with a lot of good moves on the both ways during his heat and won from Bjorn. Now I had to beat Rossi for a second time after I won from him in Podersdorf and which made him snacking to revenge for Podersdorf. I went out and I had for the first time in the competition now stress at all. It where finally the conditions where I was used to, strong wind for 3.7 some waves and I had a really good warming up session a really felt ready and was finally totally used to the PWA judging system. I had my best heat of the event so far it just went perfect. I did big shaka’s on both sides, double spock OH, nice ponch, good airflaka and ended with a shovit-spock in front of the judges I was really stocked and had a really good feeling! And I won with 9 points difference and would now face Stan Prompanos from Greece who sailed a really good heat and kicked out Andy Chambers who finished 9the in the first double elimination. And again I did a perfect heat with the same moves but now only just a bit higher and faster, I was even so confident at the last minute of my heat I decided to just go for a huge shaka and see whether I would landed it or not cause I knew I already had won, and just went as high as I could but crashed it with the landing. Next up was Quince Offringa who was already sailing really good during this event so I knew this heat would be hard very hard. My start was not the best I crashed my shaka coming in 2 times and fell of just at the end of my double spock because I didn’t have any wind anymore on the inside. I knew I could crash anymore one the way in but still needed good moves if I wanted a chance against him. On the way out on the other had it just went perfect. I landed a full plaining airflaka, funnel 900 big shaka and a planning ponch and on the way in I managed to land my last 4 moves perfectly with a perfect double spock in front of the judges. But never the less I lost with a 2-1 dicision after I tie brake with half a point less on technical skill which is I think one of the closed call of whole the competition. And gave me a nice 9the place in the second double elimination and an 11the place on the event.
It was a perfect event with a very good organization with a lot of really exciting heats which gives me a lot of energy to go training hard for the next competition in Sylt to get a top 16 placement again and maybe try to get in the top 10 which for sure won’t be easy at al. For me this event was a big success, I can’t wait till next year!!
