Tarifa Winter 2008-2009
Bonaire July 2006

A journey with snow, rain, lots of wind and a little bit of sun – this could be the itinerary of this vacation.

We left Thursday evening, after convincing my parents to go – the weather predictions were awful, to Tarifa.  The journey across was a real disaster, snow and snowstorms until Burgos (Spain) – we sometimes could only drive 30 km/hour on the highways.  Saturday evening with  finally reached Tarifa.  On the first day we were treated with nice waves of 2-3 meters with a light levanter of 14-17 knots at Bolonia.  Side to side-off from the left with pure down the line waverides with the S1 4.7 and the Kode 86 wave.  Sun, wind and perfect waves – a real joy!   Unfortunately it was the last day with sun – the rain came but also the strong poniente.  After trying to freestyle in Tarifa between waves of 2-3 meters we drove to the area of Cadiz for the next days.  On Tuesday, José brought us to his home spot Sanlucar.  The wind blew perfectly for the S1 4.0 and the spot was really awesome.  Waves with big areas of flat water in between for freestyle and wind from the left.  The deeper you went the higher the waves with nice lifts for jumping.  The next three days we surfed on this spot.  Unfortunately with the massive rain and the water that came from the mountains that carried a lot of sand, the quality of the sea became bad and very sandy so you lost grip on your boom.  Friday and Saturday there was no wind so we went to Valdelagrana for golf surfing.  The next two days the wind turned south which is not good for Sanlucar so we stayed in Valdelagrana where the wind came from the left with nice waves.  It were 2 days with my S1 4.3 and my little wave board the Evo 66.  The first day the waves were around 2 meters and usually good for 1 to 2 good turns, and nice for jumping.  At the end of the day the wind became less so I could take out my freestyle board.  The second day was the best day, the wind was even stronger with full power in my S1 4.3 and the waves were a lot higher (3-4 meters) and a lot more powerful.  It was a day with lots of wipe outs but also a lot of fun.  The next two days the wind turned to the west which was on-shore at Valdelagrana so we went back to Sanlucar.  It was a nice day with nice wind but it became also clear that the water quality became too bad now with all the sand so we had to look for another location.  We went to Sancti Petri (although we knew the tide was not good).  Very strong wind for the S1 4.0 – I even had to take my S1 3.7 in the end.  Before three o’clock the water was choppy and it was difficult sailing with the strong current; I guess around 8 km/h.  But at 3.00 p.m. the tide turned and around 4.30 the spot showed its real potential.  The current came from the other side now which gave nice flat water in front of a sand bank.  With the strong wind you had no trouble with the current – only when you fell – you had to pay attention to the boats who were on Anker – you had to rush back on your board.  It was perfect for freestyle for the S1 3.7 with perfect flat water and a nice way to finish a good holiday with lots of wind, unfortunately also with lots of rain and nice waves.

Tarifa and the area of Cadiz were great again.  Now I am back in the cold Belgium with temperatures around freezing.  Let’s hope this gets better soon!

Aloha.
